PAFA Consulting Engineers is involved in the preparation of International Standards Organisation (ISO) documents for the design of offshore structures for oil and natural gas – the 19900 series of standards.  Members of our staff have participated in the detailed workings of panels contributing provisions for fixed and floating steel offshore structures, topsides and jack-ups.  In addition, Paul Frieze has performed detailed editing work for the floating structures, marine operations and stationkeeping standards, as a member of three-man editing panels.

The editing panels for stationkeeping systems and floating structures were tasked with ensuring consistency of the documents with the requirements of the ISO Directives (Directives Part 2), as well as alignment with the terminology, structure and philosophy of the rest of the ISO 19900 standards. They comprised:

Dr W R (Bob) Wolfram - Exxon Development Co, Houston

Dr Andrea Mangiavacchi - Experia Consulting, Houston

Dr Paul Frieze - PAFA Consulting Engineers, Hampton (London).

The panel completed its work on the stationkeeping systems standard in 2005 with publication of “ISO 19901-7 Petroleum and natural gas industries - Specific requirements for offshore structures - Part 7: Stationkeeping systems for floating offshore structures and mobile offshore units.”  This same panel also worked on the floating offshore structures standard (“ISO 19904-1 Petroleum and natural gas industries - Floating offshore structures - Part 1: Monohulls, semi-submersibles and spars”) and completed this work in 2006.  Editing work is currently on-going on the preparation of a Minor Amendment to ISO 19901‑7 with publication expected in late 2008.

An additional ad hoc editorial panel was established to help finalise the standard on Marine operations.  The panel, similar to the above but with Dr Jan Vugts of Vugts Consultancy, The Hague , replacing Dr Wolfram, is currently tackling this work and is expected to complete by the end of September 2008, shortly after the next steering committee meeting, TC 67/SC 7.

Financial support for this editing work was provided by the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers OGP.
